Amatory Brooch

German

On view at The Met Cloisters in Gallery 14

When first discovered in 1863, the Colmar Treasure included two golden letters: A and R. Both have disappeared. A popular type of jewelry, letters were often offered by a lover, as this E demonstrates. The suitor appears in miniature holding arrows aimed at his heart, as if struck by Cupid. An inscription hidden inside sends a secret message to the woman who once pinned this brooch to her chest: "Fair lady, may I always remain close to your heart."
